The Virtue of Charity, also called love, is the highest and most beautiful of all Christian virtues. It goes far beyond giving to the poor or donating to good causes. Charity is the way we love God and others—deeply, freely, and selflessly.
As Saint Paul said, “And now these three remain: faith, hope and charity. But the greatest of these is charity” (1 Corinthians 13:13, Douay-Rheims).
Charity is not just about what we do; it’s about who we become.
When we live a life of charity, we are reflecting God's own heart. This virtue brings light to our spiritual journey and shapes how we treat every person we meet—with respect, kindness, and love.
Many people think of charity as simply giving money or things away. But true charity goes much deeper. It means loving others the way God loves us: unconditionally.
One of the most surprising teachers of unconditional love in my life has been… my cat. 🐱 She’s independent, and she definitely sets the terms for when I’m allowed to pet her! But even with her quiet, subtle signs, she shows me affection in her own way. She doesn’t hold grudges or expect perfection—she just loves. And in a strange way, that reminds me of how God loves us: patiently and without conditions.
✝️ “Charity is patient, is kind: charity envieth not, dealeth not perversely... thinketh no evil.”
—1 Corinthians 13:4–5 (Douay-Rheims)
Charity is more than a feeling. It’s a way of life. It means:
Jesus gave us the perfect example. Every act of healing, teaching, and sacrifice He made came from divine charity. And the beautiful thing is, we are invited to imitate Him—not by being perfect, but by loving more each day, even in small ways.
Travel with Mary through the hill country in The Visitation of Mary and Elizabeth.
Her journey wasn’t just physical—it was spiritual. Mary brought Christ to Elizabeth in her womb and in her love. This story helps us see that real charity moves us to action, joy, and service.

Challenges
Living a life of love isn’t without struggle. Some common obstacles include:
But charity calls us to rise above these tendencies. We can pray for the strength to be generous even when it's uncomfortable.
“Let all your things be done in charity” (1 Corinthians 16:14, D-R).
In my personal story, Acts of Charity, I share how walking with a loved one through a hard season taught me more about God’s love than anything else.
When charity costs us something, that’s when it becomes a true gift.
By releasing judgement, we can open our hearts to others and express genuine Charity.
It can be hard to prioritize charity over personal gain. True fulfilment comes from giving and serving others, rather than accumulating wealth and possessions.
🌟 The Beautiful Rewards of Charity
The Virtue of Charity is not only for the good of others—it changes us, too. Here are some of the graces we receive:
“Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy” (Matthew 5:7, D-R).
One of the most comforting rewards is the peace that flows from doing what is right in God's eyes. It’s a peace that doesn’t depend on circumstances but comes straight from the Holy Spirit.
My absolute favorite is the inner peace that God grants us. This divine gift brings a profound sense of joy and satisfaction that material possessions can never offer. It's a peace that transcends our circumstances, providing comfort and assurance in times of uncertainty and difficulty. Through this inner peace, we are reminded of God's unwavering presence and love, helping us to remain grounded and connected to our faith.
Jesus taught that those who love and serve others will inherit the Kingdom of Heaven, offering the promise of eternal life. The question is, isn't that reward worth every effort?
There are days when showing charity feels impossible. We’re tired, stressed, or hurt. But it’s in these moments that God’s grace works the most. When I struggle, I turn to the Rosary—especially the Sorrowful Mysteries—to remind myself how Jesus loved even when He was rejected and in pain.
His charity was never based on how He was treated, but on who He is: Love itself.
Charity isn’t just something we do—it’s a way of being. Every kind word, quiet forgiveness, or small sacrifice can bring Christ’s love into the world. Through charity, we become His hands and heart to others.
