Gifts of the Holy Spirit

During the five difficult years at my job, a dear friend asked me if I wanted to attend a healing Mass at the Cathedral in Metuchen. I wavered. Then I said yes.

That evening I was slain in the Spirit. Someone placed me on the floor. I eventually came around because of the cold tile beneath me — but I was unable to rise. My legs had no strength in them at all. An attendant came to help as I finally sat up. And in that moment, I heard a word clearly in my head: Grace.

I was sitting there crying when I turned my head to the right. My friend had been standing beside me. She was still lying on the floor, not moving. She had been slain as well. We both eventually made our way to the pew and sat together for a while. It was the first time anything like this had ever happened to me. I did not fully understand it then. But I understood one word: grace.

These are the gifts of the Holy Spirit at work: not always in ways we plan for or understand, but always real, always sufficient, always pointing us somewhere we could not have gotten to on our own.

The Seven Gifts Explained

Wisdom

This gift allows us to perceive the world as God does — to prioritize what truly matters, eternal and spiritual truths, over fleeting material concerns. Through wisdom, we learn to appreciate God's plan and seek a life rooted in His love and purpose.

I often find myself reflecting on life's bigger picture, especially when juggling work, family, and faith. Wisdom allows me to step back and prioritize what's truly important — nurturing relationships and living in alignment with God's will.

Understanding

With understanding, we gain insight into the mysteries of faith — the deeper meanings of God's Word and His works. It fosters clarity in our beliefs, enabling us to embrace and apply them to our daily lives with confidence.

Sometimes, when reading Scripture or facing a challenging situation, I feel an "aha" moment where God's truths click for me. These moments of understanding help me navigate life with clarity and bring a sense of peace.

Counsel — Right Judgment

Counsel guides us to make decisions that align with God's will — acting as a moral compass, helping us discern right from wrong in complex situations. It is especially valuable when seeking guidance in uncertain moments.

I've learned to pause and pray before making big decisions. Counsel guides me toward actions that reflect kindness and integrity — including the decision to finally leave a job that had tested me for years, and to do it with a calm I had never felt before.

Fortitude — Courage

This gift strengthens us to stand firm in our faith, even when faced with obstacles, fears, or opposition. Fortitude empowers us to embrace challenges courageously and remain steadfast in our love for God.

There have been times when I've had to step out of my comfort zone — standing up for someone in need, or facing my own fears. Courage reminds me that God's strength is with me, pushing me forward when my own runs out.

Knowledge

The gift of knowledge enables us to see beyond superficial appearances and recognize God's hand in our lives and the world around us. It encourages us to pursue truth and equips us to make decisions grounded in faith.

I love observing the world around me — whether it's seeing God's handiwork in nature or recognizing His blessings in my own life. Knowledge helps me appreciate His presence and use what I've been given to serve others meaningfully.

Piety — Reverence

Piety fills our hearts with a profound love and respect for God and His creation. It nurtures a spirit of devotion and fosters relationships built on kindness and humility — a deeper sense of connection to God and His people.

In the midst of a busy day, I find solace in small acts of devotion — praying during a quiet moment or expressing gratitude for life's blessings. These moments anchor me and deepen my connection with God.

Fear of the Lord — Wonder and Awe

This gift instills a sense of awe and reverence for God's greatness and glory. It is not fear in the negative sense — but recognizing God's infinite power and love, inspiring us to live in a way that honors and pleases Him.

Every now and then I am struck by the beauty and grandeur of creation — a stunning sunset, the laughter of loved ones, the word heard clearly on a cold cathedral floor. It fills me with awe and gratitude for God's boundless love and power.

Through Mary's Eyes

From the very beginning, Mary, the Blessed Mother, exemplified the gifts of the Holy Spirit in her life. When the angel Gabriel announced that she would bear the Son of God, Mary's Wisdom allowed her to see beyond her fears and trust God's divine plan. She embraced this extraordinary calling with grace, demonstrating Fortitude as she faced uncertainty and potential criticism from others.

Throughout her journey, Mary's Understanding was evident in her reflections. Scripture tells us that she "pondered these things in her heart" (Luke 2:19). Her deep insight into God's will guided her decisions and strengthened her role as the mother of Jesus. Her Counsel shone through when she directed the servants at the wedding in Cana: "Do whatever He tells you" (John 2:5) — pointing others toward trust in her Son.

Mary also demonstrated Knowledge by recognizing God's hand in every moment of her life, proclaiming in her Magnificat: "The Mighty One has done great things for me" (Luke 1:49). This profound awareness inspired her to live a life of humility and service. Her Piety was unwavering as she remained steadfast in prayer and devotion — even standing at the foot of the cross, her heart united with God's.

As our spiritual mother, Mary encourages us to cultivate these same gifts in our own lives. She reminds us that trust in God's plan, even when it seems unclear, brings peace and purpose. She invites us to ponder His truths, to act with courage and faith, and to live with humility and devotion. Mary's life serves as a shining example — urging us to open our hearts to the Holy Spirit and let His gifts transform us.
