Iesus In Sepulcro Ponitur

Into the Silence of the Tomb

As I stand at Lourdes Lower Station 14, I feel the finality of this moment. Jesus’s lifeless body, once so full of joy, compassion, and love, is now still. In the shock of it, grief creeps in slowly as I try to understand. Even in this darkest moment, I am reminded that God’s promise of new life and redemption is ever-present. Here I am called simply to trust.

Jesus, I trust in You… I am not left alone. In fact, I have received the greatest blessing of all: Jesus, with me, even here, even now.

“Jesus, I trust in You… I am not left alone — I have received the greatest blessing of all: Jesus, with me.”

V. We adore Thee, O Christ, and we praise Thee.

R. Because by Thy holy cross, Thou hast redeemed the world.

When I realize that I am capable of the same failures as anyone else, I understand that I, too, can be unfaithful. This is itself a blessing from God’s love — prompting me to cling to Him, and to strive each day to stay close.

“My buried Jesus, I kiss the stone that encloses Thee. But Thou didst rise again on the third day. I beseech Thee by Thy resurrection, Jesus, let me rise glorious with Thee on the last day.”

— Saint Alphonsus Liguori, The Way of the Cross

V. Have mercy upon us, O Lord. R. Have mercy on us. May the souls of the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace.

Mary

A Glimmer of Hope in the Silence

I am quiet now, and humbled, gazing at my Son’s lifeless body being placed in the tomb. My heart is heavy with sorrow.

Despite the grief, I hold onto a glimmer of hope, trusting in God’s plan even when I cannot yet see where it leads.

Where do you find a glimmer of hope in your own silence?

John

The Last Act of Love

I help place His body into the tomb, handling my beloved Teacher with all the love and gentleness I have left in me.

As I step out and move toward Mary, we watch together as the stone is rolled across the entrance. Love doesn’t end where the story seems to.

What is the last, quiet act of love you can offer someone today?

A Roman Soldier

The Soldier Who Began to Wonder

This execution felt different than any I’ve carried out before. Duty holds me here, but something in me is torn.

I looked up as darkness fell over the land, felt the earthquake take my footing away, and I quietly ask myself: could this man have been truly innocent?

Has doubt ever cracked open a truth you weren’t ready to face?

A Final Gift, Freely Given

I kept my belief and my involvement quiet for so long. Now I am giving Him my own tomb — a deeply personal thing to hand over.

I hope it’s remembered simply as a small act of kindness. I want nothing in return — only to have done right by Him.

What is something of your own you could give, expecting nothing back?

The silence continues to follow me as I move away from this station. My soul is very quiet, a subtle darkness surrounding me. I know this is a time of grieving for me — I have been here before, with loved ones who have passed. My experience during this time is silence, and waiting, and watching my own soul weep. Yet in our darkest moments, finding hope often begins with the smallest of steps — as simple as reaching out to a friend or loved one, allowing their support to remind us that we are not alone.

Faith can shape our perception of death by offering comfort, meaning, and hope. It transforms death from a source of fear into a passage to eternal life with God, and encourages acceptance of death as a natural part of a larger, divine plan — one held by a higher love than our own. Ask yourself: how does your faith shape your own perspective on death?
