I Would Pass Out on the First Nail

The Lourdes Lower Station 11 of the Cross, where Jesus is nailed to the cross, stands as one of the most heart-wrenching and poignant moments of His Passion. This station holds the intense physical agony and profound spiritual significance of Jesus’ sacrifice for humanity, inviting us to reflect on the suffering, love, and redemption woven into this event.

That’s it in a nutshell, but I feel the agony of each of those nails being driven into my hand. Forget each nail — I stand corrected, I would pass out on the first one. My Lord had to endure this excruciating pain for my sins. God loves me so much to do this, so that I can have a relationship with Him. I have to let this sink in as I sit quietly here meditating on Lourdes Lower Station 11.

But Jesus says, come to me, my burden is light. I keep having to relearn that His yoke was never meant to crush me the way mine sometimes does.

I wear this cross around my neck most days. Some mornings it is a declaration of faith. Other mornings, if I am honest, it is just something I put on without thinking — the way anyone puts on a piece of jewelry.

Watching Him nailed to the real one reminds me which mornings I want to be having.

When did a familiar symbol of your faith last stop you and actually mean something?

Jesus, I am sorry for my sins. I am sorry that all these years I didn’t even recognize You. I searched and searched, but for all the wrong reasons. That first nail is too much — the excruciating pain You must have felt at that first nail.

The cross represents the profound love of God, who sent His only Son to die for our redemption. This act of sacrifice is the ultimate act of love and mercy, and the empty cross that follows it is the promise of hope and eternal life.
