The Courage to Step Forward

We are almost at the halfway point, and we have now seen three acts of kindness. Mary, His mother, making contact to support Jesus after His fall beneath the heavy wooden cross.

Simon, willing to help bear the burden with Jesus, assisting in carrying the cross. And now we see Veronica stepping forward at Lourdes Lower Station 6 to wipe Jesus’ face with her scarf. Her act of compassion is a good example to contemplate and meditate on.

“Is your heart open to see when such a moment is presented for you to act?”

Internally, as I contemplate this scene, I am changing, growing deeper into my spiritual understanding of the lessons Jesus is still teaching, even while He suffers. My Lord, I pray for You to continue to open my eyes wider as I continue following You.

Station 6, Veronica Wipes the Face of Jesus, at the Lourdes Lower Prairie Stations

This woman moves through the crowd to help Jesus by wiping His face. What a beautiful act of compassion and courage. Was she not afraid of the soldiers? Her focus on Jesus takes away all the other evil acts around her, to simply love Him.

Moving Before Fear Could Catch Up

I don’t remember deciding to move. One moment I was watching from the edge of the crowd, and the next I was pushing through it, cloth in hand, before fear could catch up with me.

I don’t know what I expected the soldiers to do. I only know I couldn’t stand still and watch His face a moment longer without doing something.

What might you do differently if you acted before your fear had time to catch up with you?

My orders don’t account for this. A woman broke from the crowd, walked straight past us, and no one told me what to do about a kindness.

I let her pass. I’m still not sure why.

We watched her go where none of us were brave enough to go. Some of us felt ashamed. Some of us told ourselves it wasn’t our place. All of us kept our distance.

Only Veronica moved.

When was the last time someone else’s courage revealed your own hesitation?

True compassion requires a transformation of the heart. It means seeing others through the eyes of Christ, recognizing their inherent dignity and worth — a transformation fostered through prayer, reflection, and a willingness to be open to the needs of others. It calls for humility, empathy, and putting the needs of others before our own.

I can only accomplish any of this with Jesus’ help. Every day I look for a way to transform my own heart, and even writing this website — looking deeper, past the surface, into what these stations actually mean — has become part of how mine keeps being transformed.

I picture myself standing here beside Veronica, and I ask her: how do we help our Lord? She answers simply — love Him. Being here, contemplating and meditating on His Passion, is its own kind of reparation for His wounds. You can’t keep your heart from being transformed once you slow down long enough to be quiet, and wait for the answer to come.
