JESUS MEETS HIS MOTHER

Lourdes High Station 04 Lourdes High Station 04 brings us to the heart-wrenching moment when Jesus and Mary meet on the road to Calvary. At Lourdes Espelugues Grotto, this station reveals what happens when suffering love meets compassionate love.

Their eyes meet, and in that glance a lifetime of shared memory passes between them. Mary sees her baby, her boy, her beloved Son. Jesus sees the woman who said yes to God, who has walked every step with Him, who knows His mission completely. This station teaches me that love does not shelter us from pain but walks through it with us, and that when I suffer I am never truly alone.

V. We adore Thee, O Christ, and we praise Thee.

R. Because by Thy holy cross, Thou hast redeemed the world.

Jesus, at Lourdes High Station 04, You meet Your mother's eyes and I find myself wondering what passed between You in that moment. Did she remember Bethlehem, when she held You close and safe? Did You remember Nazareth, when she bandaged Your scraped knees and dried Your childhood tears?

Now she cannot protect You from what is coming, and You cannot spare her from witnessing it, yet there is such profound love in this meeting that it silences everything around it.

Teach me to be present to those I love when they suffer. So often I want to fix everything, to take away the pain, to make it all better somehow. But sometimes love means simply being there, meeting their eyes, and letting them know they are not alone. Help me to be a compassionate presence like Mary in the lives of those who carry heavy crosses.

Through the eyes of those who loved Him most

The Mother's Gaze

Our eyes meet and time stops. In His face I see every version of Him I have ever known: the infant I nursed, the child who learned to walk holding my hands, the young man who worked beside Joseph, the teacher who changed the world. Now I see the Savior who carries its sin.

I cannot speak. Words would shatter us both. But I can look at Him with all the love a mother holds, and somehow that is enough. My presence says what my voice cannot: I am here. I have always been here. I will be here until the very end.

The Witness of Tenderness

When they meet, mother and son, I am struck by the tenderness between them even in the middle of this horror. She does not beg Him to stop and He does not apologize for what she must endure. They simply see each other, fully and completely, the way He once saw me when others only saw my sins.

Real love sees the person, not the problem. Real love honors the journey even when that journey leads to Calvary, and I am learning from her in this moment that following Jesus sometimes means trusting that He knows what He is doing even when every instinct screams to intervene.

The Son's Blessing

In this moment between Jesus and His mother I see something I will carry for the rest of my life. Even in His agony He thinks of her. Even carrying the cross He notices her pain and lets her know through that single long look that she is seen and loved.

This is who He is, the suffering servant who still serves even while suffering. He is showing me what it means to care for others even when you are the one in crisis, teaching me that love never stops thinking of others' needs even when its own needs are desperate beyond measure.
