The Stone of Scripture

The Stone of Scripture

In the stone of scripture Our Lady in Medjugorje urgently invites us to do something simple yet radical: read the Bible every single day. She reminds us that the Word of God is not a historical artifact bound in leather; it is a living, breathing reality. It is bread for the soul, a lamp for the step, and an enduring voice that echoes through our lives if we make space to listen.

This reminder bridges perfectly with what I witnessed on the pathways of Santiago de Compostela. The speaking stones of O Xardín das Pedras que Falan remind us that God has always spoken across time through the rawness of creation and through carved, deliberate words. When a truth is etched deeply into a physical monument, it waits patiently for you to find it. Scripture does the exact same thing.

The Empty Page: Waiting for the Father

Years ago, I was reading a book by the spiritual author Joel S. Goldsmith, who spoke deeply about how we internalize Holy Scripture. He noted that when a piece of Scripture truly finds you, you should come to know it like the back of your own hand. One particular truth from the Gospel of John stood out to me so profoundly that I have repeated it to myself thousands of times:

“I of my own self can do nothing... without the Father.”
— John 5:19, 30

The core teaching buried inside those words became the anchor for how I live, create, and even how I build this website. Left entirely to my own human strength, I can do nothing. Everything that comes to life here is meant for the glory of God.

There are many days that go by where I simply cannot write. The creativity isn't there, the screen stays blank, and the words refuse to form. In the past, that might have felt like failure. But Scripture teaches us a different rhythm: it forces us to wait quietly for divine guidance to lead the way. We do not have to force the path. When we empty ourselves of the pressure to perform, we make room for the Father to work through us.

Voices in the Garden: Reading the Living Book

You do not need to be someone who memorizes vast chapters of the Bible to live a scriptural life. Often, Scripture works exactly like the scattered blocks in a garden—hidden fragments that suddenly rush to mind right when you are facing a specific, difficult circumstance. Just as we pause over the markers on our pilgrimage, three distinct inscriptions from the Spanish garden help unlock how the stone of scripture meets us where we stand:

"The green leaves…"

God writes His Word not only in sacred text, but across the canvas of living creation. The garden itself becomes our very first living book. When we align Scripture with the quiet rhythm of nature, the words take root in our actual, everyday environments. Read the full story here →

"Stone dream in time…"

An inscription on stone stands completely still against the wind, weather, and time. This is how we are called to hold the Word. Let just one single verse rest upon a stone in your heart. Turn it over for days at a time, allowing its texture to slowly shape, smooth, and transform your inner life. Read the full story here →

"The song of the poet…"

Even our raw human creativity, our expressions, and our struggles can be baptized by grace and woven into the grand tapestry of the living Word. God uses the concrete medium of human language to reach down and meet us exactly where we wander. Read the full story here →

The Rosary Connection: Walking in the Light

To see how this pillar anchors our daily walk, this page is best paired directly with the Luminous Mysteries of the Rosary—most notably the Proclamation of the Kingdom and the Transfiguration.

In the Luminous Mysteries, Christ steps forward to declare the truth openly. The Word speaks directly to the crowd. During the Transfiguration, the voice from the cloud commands us: "Listen to Him." Reading daily Scripture is our direct answer to that command. It is how we pull back the veil of ordinary life and let His light transfigure our daily routines.

When we let the living Word confront our hidden faults and bring things to light, the path naturally takes a deeper turn. We realize we cannot properly carry this light without a clean slate. These internal awakening forms the perfect bridge, moving us away from the instruction of Scripture and flowing directly into the healing mercy of our fourth step: the Stone of Confession.

This Week's Seed

The Practice of a Single Verse: Do not worry about memorizing large volumes of text. Instead, find just one brief phrase that addresses what you are facing right now. It could be Christ's reminder: "Of my own self I can do nothing."

Carry It on Your Way: Treat that verse like a smooth stone tucked safely inside your pocket. When you hit a block in your day, when you cannot create, or when your own strength runs dry, reach for it. Turn it over in your mind.

Wait for the Stream: Let the verse speak patiently and persistently to your unique circumstances. Allow yourself to stop pushing, step out of the way, and wait comfortably for divine guidance to step in.

When you're ready to move forward: The Stone of Confession, rolling away guilt and fear.
